Q: What would you say to someone starting therapy for the first time?

A: I would say that it’s completely normal if you feel nervous about what will unfold. The first stages are about you getting to know your therapist's style and the therapist getting to know you and the areas you'd like to work on. You can take this process slowly and share things about yourself at a pace that feels right for you. There's no rush.

As you get more comfortable, you might choose to share more, share things you never have before, and allow yourself to acknowledge problems. In doing so, sometimes you might feel a bit raw at first and that is completely normal too. It might take some time for you to feel comfortable with your therapist but give it a chance as therapy can be transformational.

Q: What do you love most about being a psychologist?

I really value the authentic connections I make. It’s a privilege to know someone on that level and to be able to help them feel emotionally supported. Psychology is also a constant intellectual challenge – I'm always reflecting on my work and my clients.

Q: What do you think is one of the hardest things about being a psychologist?

Not having quick fixes to some problems. Sometimes psychology is actually a process of realising that the ‘fix’ isn't quite what they imagined it to be. But, I must say, the actual "fix" can be even better.

What is one the most important experiences you’ve had as a psychologist?

A: The team support that I feel at Inlight Psychology has helped me become the best therapist I can be. Being able to take time out or reducing my hours when feeling personally limited has been very important.
